{"id":2261,"date":"2015-01-04T12:12:26","date_gmt":"2015-01-04T18:12:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/davidschalliol.com\/blog\/?p=2261"},"modified":"2019-07-30T16:47:27","modified_gmt":"2019-07-30T21:47:27","slug":"another-year-of-projects-and-a-little-travel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/davidschalliol.com\/blog\/2015\/01\/04\/another-year-of-projects-and-a-little-travel\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Year of Projects and A Little Travel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even more than <a href=\"https:\/\/davidschalliol.com\/blog\/2014\/01\/01\/a-year-of-projects-and-more-travel\/\">2013<\/a>, I spent 2014 working on projects, including the films <em>Almost There<\/em> and <em>The Area<\/em>, and photography series about subsidized housing in New York City and Japan&#8217;s T&#333;hoku region. When not working on those projects, I continued to travel through the United States, often to work on my ongoing collaboration with Michael Carriere at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Below, I have included sample photographs from those projects, alongside supplementary images I made in many of the cities I visited throughout the year. As always, you can click through most of the photographs to view them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/metroblossom\/\">on flickr<\/a>, alongside many other everyday images.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PROJECTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Almost There<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/davidschalliol.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/17\/almost-there-in-northwestern-indiana\/\">In 2013, I produced a body of work<\/a> as Environmental Cinematographer for the <a href=\"http:\/\/itvs.org\">ITVS<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/kartemquin.com\">Kartemquin Films<\/a> project <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.almostthereproject.com\">Almost There<\/a><\/em>. After a year of post-production work, the film made its world premiere <a href=\"http:\/\/www.docnyc.net\/film\/almost-there\/\">at DOCNYC in November<\/a>. It has since <a href=\"http:\/\/arclightdocseries.com\/films\/almost-there\/\">screened at ArcLight Hollywood<\/a>, and its Chicago premiere will be on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.siskelfilmcenter.org\/almostthere\">January 10, 2015 at the Gene Siskel Film Center<\/a>. Watch for it on PBS later this year. <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/109723683?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0&amp;color=ffffff\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Area<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I continue to busily work on <em>The Area<\/em>, alongside editors Brian Ashby and <a href=\"http:\/\/petergalassi.com\">Peter Galassi<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scrappersfilmgroup.com\">Scrappers Film Group<\/a>. Thanks to the support from the Graham Foundation, the Driehaus Foundation, and the City of Chicago&#8217;s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, we produced more than three hours of edited footage last summer and are preparing for another round of editing early in 2015. Still, I am not done with the project and expect to be filming into 2015. I will provide more details about that series when it is published as part of a book project next year. In the meantime, I&#8217;ve included two images below. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/metroblossom\/14940232204\" title=\"Markham Gardens Kids Walking Through Buildings by David Schalliol, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5609\/14940232204_a98539bf71_c.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" alt=\"Markham Gardens Kids Walking Through Buildings\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/metroblossom\/15347996945\" title=\"Co-op City by David Schalliol, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2942\/15347996945_ddc708d861_c.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" alt=\"Co-op City\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Japan<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of 2014 I flew to Japan for an exhibition of the <a href=\"http:\/\/davidschalliol.com\/isolated_building_studies\">Isolated Building Studies<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/tantotempo.jp\">Gallery Tanto Tempo<\/a>, which led to the publication of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/davidschalliol.com\/blog\/2014\/02\/05\/new-book-isolated-building-studies\/\">Isolated Building Studies<\/a><\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/utakatado.com\">UTAKATADO Publishing<\/a>. Following my time in Kobe, I <a href=\"https:\/\/davidschalliol.com\/blog\/2014\/02\/09\/visiting-japanese-cities\/\">visited other cities<\/a> before heading into T&#333;hoku, the Japanese region critically affected by the March 11, 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent nuclear disaster. of photographs from this year&#8217;s polar vortex<\/a>, I continue to work on a broad body of work about Chicago, from general views of daily urban life to documenting specific events like <a
